Our legal content is verified with sex worker organisations across AU & NZ
Australia has a decentralised approach β laws differ by state. Click your state below.
β Decriminalised
What's legal
Sex work is fully decriminalised in NSW. You can work independently, with other workers, or for an operator. Street work is legal in most areas.
Key rules
Operators (brothels etc) must be licensed. You don't need a licence to work independently. Police cannot require you to carry ID or prove you're not a sex worker.
Watch out for
Some local councils restrict where brothels can operate. Check zoning laws if working from home. Using a minor in sex work is a serious offence.

β Decriminalised (2023)
What's legal
Victoria decriminalised sex work in 2023. You can work independently, with other workers, or in a registered business. No licence required to work independently.
Key rules
Businesses with 4+ workers need to register with Business Licensing Authority. Safe sex practices required. Cannot work if you have an STI you know about.
Watch out for
Advertising must not be explicit or target minors. Some transition provisions still in effect β check Sex Work Decriminalisation Act 2022 for full details.
Licensed brothels are legal. Private workers (sole operator, no more than 1 worker) can work legally without a licence from a private residence.
Watch out for
Working with another worker or having a receptionist may be considered running an unlicensed brothel. Street work is illegal. Escort work from a private location is a grey area.
Sole operators working privately from home or hotel are generally tolerated. Escort work arranged privately is a grey area.
Watch out for
Brothels are illegal unless licensed (very few licences exist). Street work is illegal. Working with another person may be considered keeping a brothel.

What's legal

What's illegal
Brothel keeping (two or more workers at same premises) is illegal. Street sex work is illegal in most areas. Advertising in phone boxes is illegal. Pimping and living off earnings of a sex worker is illegal.

What's legal
Sex work is legal in Germany and recognised as work. You can work independently or in a licensed brothel. Clients cannot be prosecuted. Germany has one of the largest legal sex industries in Europe.
The registration requirement (Hurenpass)
Since 2017, all sex workers must register with local authorities and carry a sex worker ID card (colloquially called the Hurenpass). Registration requires your full name, address, date of birth, nationality, and two photos. This information is shared with tax authorities. The requirement is heavily criticised by worker organisations for exposing workers to stigma and surveillance.
Key rules for businesses
Brothels must be licensed and meet structural requirements including alarm systems and multiple bathrooms. Workers cannot sleep in the same room they work in. Condom use is legally required β clients who refuse can be fined up to β¬50,000.
Watch out for β migrants & visa holders
Mandatory registration is particularly dangerous for migrant workers from countries where sex work is illegal. Registration creates a permanent government record of your occupation. Organisations like SWAG and Hydra can advise on your specific situation.
The movement for change
German sex workers are actively fighting for full decriminalisation. The Sex Worker Action Group (SWAG) in Berlin recently introduced a new draft Sex Work Act (Sexarbeitsgesetz) calling for decriminalisation and proper employment rights. The fight is ongoing β stay connected to local orgs.

π΄ Largely criminalised β varies by state
Important β FOSTA-SESTA (2018)
Federal laws passed in 2018 made it harder for platforms to operate in the US adult industry space. If you're a US-based worker accessing RIVA, know that this platform is based in Australia where sex work is legal. You are accessing safety information β not a facilitation service.
Nevada β only legal state
Licensed brothels are legal in certain Nevada counties (not Las Vegas). Strict health testing required. Cannot work independently β must be affiliated with a licensed brothel.
All other states
Sex work is criminalised federally and in all other states. Decriminalisation movements are active in Rhode Island, New York, Vermont, California and DC. Laws are changing β stay connected to local organisations.
Know your rights
You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney. You do not have to answer questions about your occupation. SWOP chapters exist in most major US cities β find yours at swopusa.org

FAQ
Everything you need to know about RIVA
Is RIVA really anonymous? βΊ
Yes. We never ask for your real name or email. You can search and submit reports with zero identity stored. Even if you create an account, it's linked only to a phone number β and we never share that with anyone.
Is RIVA legal? βΊ
Yes. RIVA is based in Australia where sex work is decriminalised in multiple states. The platform is a community safety information tool β similar to a neighbourhood watch database. It does not facilitate bookings or transactions. It is accessible globally as an information service.
How is this different to WhatsApp groups? βΊ
WhatsApp groups require someone to see your message and reply β which can take minutes or hours. RIVA gives you a result in under 3 seconds. Reports are also structured, searchable, and never get buried. A number reported in Sydney is instantly visible to a worker in Melbourne or Auckland.
What if someone submits a false report? βΊ
Reports are community-submitted and moderated by our team. We show report counts β a single unverified report carries less weight than five consistent reports. Our admin team reviews flagged entries and can remove false reports. We also track patterns to identify bad faith submissions.
Can I report someone who bullied another worker? βΊ
Yes. RIVA covers both client safety and worker-on-worker situations. The "Bullying other workers" flag exists specifically for this. The community protects everyone in it.
Will anything show on my bank statement? βΊ
No. We accept Bitcoin and Neosurf vouchers which leave no statement trace. Card payments through Segpay use a discreet billing descriptor. Nothing identifies RIVA on your statement.
How does the 7-day free trial work? βΊ
You get full access to your chosen plan for 7 days completely free. If it's not faster and more useful than what you currently use, message us and we'll refund every cent. No questions asked.
What does the 5% community giving actually go to? βΊ
Every month, members vote on which causes receive the 5% from that month's subscriptions. Options include sexual health supplies, legal defence funds, crisis support, safety equipment, and contributions to organisations like Scarlet Alliance and NZPC. The total given is published publicly every month.
Is RIVA available outside Australia? βΊ
Yes. RIVA covers Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and has a community bulletin board for US workers. The platform is accessible globally. Country and state filters let you search and report for your specific location.
Who built RIVA? βΊ
RIVA was co-founded by active sex workers in Australia alongside a technical co-founder. The platform is built by the community, for the community β every feature has been shaped by people who have lived this work.
